Please join us at Harrison Gallery this Saturday, February 3, from 6-8pm for a special showing of Santa Fe artist, Melinda K. Hall's series "A Love Possessed", that coincides with Undying Love, A Key West Musical. We will also be highlighting new aluminum, charcoal and graphite works by Key West artist Joanne Klein.

Hall was inspired to create her interpretation of this story in a series of 8 paintings entitled, "A Love Possessed". She decided to capture the events in an Ex Voto style. Ex Voto, short for Ex Voto Susepto, is a Latin term "from the vow made", a painted offering often found in churches or shrines in thanksgiving for a miracle received. Because Hall is a narrative painter by nature, this sort of story telling with pictures and words suits her preferred artistic sensibilities and the story of Carl von Cosel and Elena is most certainly woven with the notions of vows, miracles and dark humor.

Please join us Thursday for the Walk on White. Our show will feature new work by local, national and international artists, Katie Pumphrey, JoAnne Klein and Kiff Slemmons. Each of their work is completely unique yet all seem to similarly employ, as Slemmons says, “the language of materials, their possibility for metaphor and the idea of array.”

Katie Pumphrey is a recent resident artist at The Studios of Key West. Her paintings feel like being underwater, which is fitting since she is a long distance, open water swimmer and just completed a swim around the island of Key West. This aspect of her life influences her work. Her recent pieces explore movement, competitive roles, and instincts through large-scale paintings and drawings on paper and canvas.

Although best known nationally and internationally for her metal work, Kiff Slemmons has also been recognized for working in Oaxaca with Mexican artists, designing and fashioning jewelry out of handmade and dyed paper. It is assumed that paper is fragile, but Slemmon’s work demonstrates its strength. We’ll be showing her paper jewelry collection from Oaxaca Museum.

JoAnne Klein is a Key West artist who has spent many years studying and expanding her work with aluminum on graphite. We will be showing three phases of this process.
