February 18 :: 30 year Anniversary Show

In 1986, Harrison Gallery and Music was opened by sculptor Helen Harrison and her husband, Ben, a writer and musician. Over the past thirty years it has evolved into Harrison Gallery, a Key West institution that has earned a reputation as a destination for some of the best fine art in the area.

The work of the Harrison’s, along with that of a select group of contemporary artists from around the world, make the gallery a truly personal and unique artistic experience with a clear commitment to showcasing fresh creativity.

January 21 :: Call of the Wild :: Walk on White

HARRISON GALLERY, 6-8PM

When in Key West, a profound connection with the natural world can be felt immediately—a bond that is inextricably linked to the wonder of our island and its unique arts community. Our first show of the New Year is a testament to Mother Nature, an ode to her endless allure and mystery.

Helen Harrison accentuates nature's sensuous beauty through sculptural works of wood and found organic materials. Her work calls us to pay reverence to the often-overlooked splendor that surrounds us every day.

Philip Ross Munro expresses his desire for ever-expanding universal consciousness in his latest series, The Crystal Wave. These photographs reflect moments in nature and their hidden spirits, sneaking from eternal hiding places caught in the moment like shadows each with their own narrative.

April 16th . 6-8 pm :: Rosalind Brackenbury Book Signing :: Bonnard's Dog :: Key West . FL

Recently named the 2015 Poet Laureate of Key West, Rosalind Brackenbury is the author of twelve novels and two books of short stories. This is her eighth book of poems. Harvey Shapiro praised her poetry as "a palpable pleasure on the tongue." A native of England, she now divides her time between Key West and Paris.

 "[A] book of arrival's stock-taking, of time-delving and time-wrestling, of gratitude, of opening to the gift that is even our losses. It shows, precise detail by precise detail, how the past is carried into the present: on the hooves of horses, the stairs of a pigeon tower, the notes of a long-vanished piano, and also by accident, by luck. With deft mastery, Rosalind Brackenbury distills the facts and feel of a deeply lived through and profoundly attended-to existence-and her title poem here, I must add, is simply wondrous. ”

— Jane Hirschfield

In addition to Helen Harrison and other gallery favorites, we will also have work on display by Vera Vasek, a visual artist who explores the character and beauty of intertidal zones.

ROOSTER BOOK LAUNCH + BVMP BENEFIT :: APRIL 12, 3-6 PM :: KEY WEST, FL

Join us at Harrison Gallery on Sunday, April 12th from 3-6 pm during our special launch party for The Rooster Who Loved the Violin, a children’s story brought to life by the collaboration of two artists with a flair for the fantastic, Ben Harrison and Carrie Disrud.

For the first 50 books sold, Ben and Carrie will be donating their share of the sales to the Bahama Village Music Program. This wonderful organization’s mission is to provide quality music education to children ages 6-16 who would otherwise not have access to private music instruction.

Students from the BVMP Suzuki Strings program will perform at the event to show off how much they love the violin! This event will also feature paintings on display from Carrie Disrud, and snacks for the kids.

About the book:

Ben Harrison sweeps readers through the lyrical tale of a violin player at an Italian restaurant and his struggles with an overly enthusiastic rooster, while Carrie Disrud’s vibrant illustrations envelop viewers into the charming fable’s rich, island setting of Key West.

The Rooster Who Loved the Violin can be enjoyed by children and adults alike, and will appeal especially to those who are too young to read and kids who are just getting the hang of it. It also includes a longer supplemental text about the real rooster encounter that inspired Ben to write the story, as well as fun photographs of local chickens around Key West.

Published by Whirlygig Kids Books, an imprint of Absolutely Amazing eBooks.

Cheryl Troxel + Helen Harrison :: February 19, 6-9 pm :: Walk on White, Key West FL

When faced with an unrecognizable image, the mind works to make

associations. Cheryl Troxel’s paintings are glimpses of a moment, windows in

one reality that can be peered into through countless others. This unique

ability of the imagination is explored using the intimate bond her work

ignites in the psyche of each new viewer.

Helen Harrison’s work accentuates nature's sensuous beauty by

revealing the character of wood and found organic materials. Each piece

is a testament to the spirit of that which was once alive, a reminder of the

ephemeral nature of existence, and a call to pay reverence to the

often-overlooked splendor that surrounds us.

Join us during the Walk on White for this visual exploration of temporality.

The Nine Gates :: Miles Frieden + Bob Schmitt :: January 15, 6-9 pm :: Walk on White, Key West FL

Miles Frieden and Bob Schmitt, friends and collaborators for three decades, dive within to provide striking visual metaphors for how the light gets in.

Student and teacher of Chinese brush painting, Bob Schmitt depicts nine gates of a spiritual journey, transforming the aesthetic of traditional Chinese scrolls into digital internal landscapes.

Miles Frieden’s sculptures expose a multitude of stories, usually embedded in relationship. These ennobled and enabled shards, rising out of imperfection, bring delight, beauty, and healing.

This exhibit is in conjunction with the 2015 Key West Literary Seminar, “How the Light Gets In: Literature of the Spirit.” It also commemorates Miles Frieden's retirement as executive director of the KWLS after 20 years.
